The Hollister City Council approved revising its mandatory qualifications for its open community service officer position, which primarily handles parking enforcement.
The city has been searching for a community service officer since July when Hollister officials revived parking enforcement downtown. In the meantime, one temporary CSO has finished his tenure, while another is on board now.
The city council Monday night voted to accept the proposal that the person hired permanently wouldn’t have to meet the qualification as an enrolled college student who maintained a 2.0 grade-point average over six semesters, according to a council staff report.
The city would look at the description as a desired qualification instead of a necessary one.
Other qualifications stayed the same and they include being fluent in English, knowing basic traffic laws and basic math, the staff report showed.
The position includes parking enforcement, records processing and other duties that support the police department. And all those who apply must pass a background check and a medical and psychological exam.
The city revived parking enforcement after postponing it for six years after the Hollister Downtown Association made a push for it while representing business owners who thought lacking enforcement hurt their customer traffic.
