Robert G. Stewart, the Canadian man whose remains recently were discovered south of Hollister, was registered as a student at the University of Calgary during the four years before his disappearance in 2006, a university spokeswoman said.

Stewart attended the school from September 2002 to August 2006, school records show, according to the spokeswoman.

While there, Stewart was working on his bachelor of arts degree in social sciences. The school could not release other information, such as how close he was to graduating, due to privacy laws.

Stewart lost contact with his family in 2006 when he had been age 29 and was reported missing in March 2009, the sheriff’s office announced Thursday. His bones were found last month, nearly a year to the day he was reported missing.

Once missing, his family members had been unaware where he might have gone, according to the Calgary Police Department.
