The Anzar High softball team picked up its first win of the season on Thursday when it routed host Marina by a 27-11 margin.

The game went the full seven innings, Hawks manager Felipe Vallejo said, as Anzar plated the majority of its runs in the later innings, including an eight-spot in the sixth frame.

“All my girls hit,” Vallejo said. “They had great defense and the pitching was there.”

Kim Naranjo connected on two inside-the-park home runs, while teammate Victoria Thornton added an inside-the-park homer as well as a double.

“That helped us out,” Vallejo said.

Casandra Vallejo, meanwhile, went 6 of 6 at the plate.

“She just kept on hitting,” the manager added.

Pitcher Tiffany Maieluea threw five innings, while Naranjo closed out the game for Anzar, which is now 1-2 in the Coastal Athletic League. Catcher Avery Pavese also connected on a double, a triple and threw two runners out trying to steal third base.

The Hawks’ schedule will ramp up next week with four games in four days. Anzar will play Monday at home against Marina, Tuesday at home to Greenfield, Wednesday on the road at Anchorpoint Christian and Thursday at home to Anchorpoint Christian.

All games are slated to start at 4 p.m.

“I’m glad the girls got their first win,” Vallejo said. “Hopefully we can keep it up.”
