With the candidates for local office submitting their campaign disclosure statements, the Free Lance is breaking down the top donors in the contested races for sheriff and two supervisorial seats.
In the sheriff’s race to succeed Curtis Hill, Undersheriff Pat Turturici led the way through March 17 with $35,979 raised in his campaign chest. Next was Marshal Robert Scattini with $10,420, Hollister police Sgt. Ray Wood with $4,150 and Watsonville police Lt. Darren Thompson with $2,669.
For Turturici, the largest donation was a $5,000 check from Santa Cruz-based Devon Construction and its owner Gary Filzetti, according to campaign documents. His next largest donor outside of a $3,000 loan from Palo Dulce of Hollister was $2,700 from K&S Market.
For the former sheriff and current marshal, Scattini, his largest donor was Richard and Diane Mendez at ACS Inc., which gave a non-monetary contribution for vinyl signs amounting to $3,912, according to records. His second-largest contributor also was non-monetary for signs – from Kenneth Perez at Hollister Collision Center for $1,113.
More than half of the total campaign chest in the Wood campaign, meanwhile, is from a $2,160 loan from himself. Some of his other major contributors include $990 from San Benito Cattle Co. and $500 from homemaker Donna Archy, according to campaign records.
The relative outsider in the race, Thompson, had four $500 contributions – from the Watsonville Police Officers Association, retired Santa Cruz firefighter S. Van Den Heuvel, Santa Clara sheriff’s Capt. and San Juan Bautista Mayor Edward Laverone, and San Benito County sheriff’s Sgt. Scott Becker, who also donated the same amount to Turturici’s campaign.
In the race for District 3 supervisor, challenger Robert Rivas had outraised incumbent Pat Loe $6,946 to $1,523, according to records. Rivas’ biggest contributors were $2,000 from Joe Coto for State Assembly and $1,500 in signs from Salinas-based ASAP Signs.
In her attempt for a third term on the board, Loe contributed a $1,000 loan to her campaign and also received donations of $200 from retiree John Pickering and $125 from resident Cameron Wright.
In the race to succeed District 4 Supervisor Reb Monaco, the two challengers had outraised the incumbent through the latest disclosure period. Phil Fortino had raised the most of the three with $37,754 followed by Jerry Muenzer at $16,709 and Monaco with $198 – though the current supervisor had $5,209 in his account to start the year.
Fortino’s largest contributors both were non-monetary – $6,497 from K&S Properties and Realty for rental of campaign headquarters and $4,200 from Leal Vineyards for two fundraisers. Muenzer’s biggest donors aside from $4,250 in loans to his own campaign were $1,500 from Effie Muenzer for office rental and $400 from Muenzer’s Inc. Monaco’s records show no itemized donations, which are required only when a donor gives at least $100.
