Dear Editor,

To approve the solar power plant proposed for the Panoche Valley would be a grave mistake. Currently, Panoche Valley is a destination for significant numbers of people who enjoy its top-notch birding and wildlife, beautiful vistas, and unparalleled tranquility. Solar panels covering thousands of acres would destroy much of the region’s appeal.

While Solargen’s project will create jobs in the short term, it destroys the potential for Panoche Valley to become a greater destination for agri-tourism, eco-tourism and a hotbed of sustainable agriculture. All of these activities can bring at least as much long term employment, economic activity, and tax revenue to San Benito County as the proposed solar power plant.

While my opinion is probably of limited value to local politicians since I live outside of San Benito County, I am certain I speak for many that will travel and spend their money elsewhere if the beautiful valley is destroyed.
