A resident recently noticed that an array of potholes had shown up along Maple Street in Hollister right in the middle of the road. City streets official Marcelo Orta said he wasn’t surprised by the observation because with the rainy weather as of late, crews have had to wait out the conditions before they address the potholes.

“We’re full of potholes all over Hollister,” Orta said.

He said when it rains so much, it’s not worth it for city crews to head out on pothole assignments. The ground gets so unstable and soft, he said, that it causes problems when placing the asphalt.

Instead, crews need the weather to get “nice and hot” to most efficiently repair the holes, Orta said. Public works has a special machine it uses for permanent patches, but the weather has to be warm for its use, he said.

“People have been pretty understanding,” Orta said.
