The recycling-themed artwork of 18 local students soon will adorn Recology garbage and recycling trucks after they were chosen as winners of the inaugural San Benito County Recycles art poster contest.

Integrated Waste Management honored the winners and displayed their work at Monday’s Hollister City Council meeting, during which agency director Mandy Rose said, “The students put their heart and soul into the contest,” held in honor of Earth Day in April.

The contest was designed to allow students from elementary school through high school to creatively express their ideas about recycling and waste reduction and help spread those messages to local residents.

“These students should be very proud that the community will see their artwork,” said Lisa Jensema, the county’s recycling and resource recovery coordinator.

The following students were honored – their teachers are noted in parenthesis:

Caitie Gonzales of Sacred Heart Parish School (Sue Connors, teacher); Adrian Andrade, Enrique Carbaja, Jesus Espinoza, Karina Gonzales and Anai Murillo of the Hollister Dual Language Academy (Lilia Trevino and Mr. Rivera, teachers); Karissa Agan, Isaak Arredondo, Jonathan Byron, Esme Garcia, Garrett Gutierrez, Stetson Hawkins, Robert Holguin, Lenae Potts, Sebastian Rayas, Jorge Robles, Kyle Stevens and Brandon Valez of San Benito High School’s Life Skills class (Mona Trevino, teacher).
