The San Juan Bautista-based Dreamor Ranch Foundation took in six of several dozen emaciated and neglected horses, but the organization soon expects more since four of the equines arrived pregnant.
“Every little bit helps,” said Mindy Sullivan, the foundation’s CEO. “It’s really expensive to feed all these guys.”
In mid-November, the Santa Clara County Animal Care and Control seized 38 unhealthy horses from a pair of ranches owned by Humberto Rivas Uribe, 51, in Morgan Hill and Gilroy. In early January, the local rancher agreed to a 90-day jail sentence; five years of probation with counseling; and that he will no longer own, have care or custody of any animals for at least 10 years.
A donation of $18-20 buys a bale of hay. The foundation feeds between five and six bales each day.
“A horse eats—especially the pregnant mares–– eat two to three bales of hay a week, each,” Sullivan said.
