PALO ALTO
It was a three-game defeat, but perhaps a step in the right direction.
Playing its first match in a week, the San Benito girls volleyball team was unable to upset Palo Alto on Thursday night when the host Vikings earned a three-set victory (25-16, 25-23, 25-9) in non-conference action.
But Baler head coach Dean Askanas said the team stuck with its game plan against Palo Alto, which is currently the top-ranked team in the Central Coast Section.
“We put up a good fight and we really stuck to our game plan, which is defense and lack of unforced errors,” said Askanas, adding that San Benito committed just 14 unforced errors in the match.
“Which is pretty good,” the head coach noted. “They had to earn 61 points. We stuck to our game plan.
“We’re moving in the right direction, I hope.”
Sophomore Ellie Burley led San Benito with five kills, while Sara Yamasaki provided 19 digs and Raelynn Heredia added 13 assists.
The loss does snap a three-game win streak for San Benito, however, which is now 4-4 overall.
The Balers will look to start another win streak this weekend at the Harbor Invitational in Santa Cruz. San Benito will play Saturday against Hillsdale at 9 a.m., and will follow with matches against Deer Valley and Aptos.
“We’re not here for moral victories,” Askanas added following the loss to Palo Alto. “We’re here to win. But I think things are looking good.”
