Last week proved to be a busy one for many South County folks.
Between school, rodeos and football games everyone seemed to be on

Last week proved to be a busy one for many South County folks. Between school, rodeos and football games everyone seemed to be on the move.
Wyatt and Lacy Bourdet, John and Kyla Rianda and Todd Sans all headed to Elko, Nev. for the Elko County Fair hot iron brandings last week. It was a quick trip for Todd who headed out at midnight last Tuesday. He arrived in Elko at 10 a.m. on Wednesday morning, roped that afternoon, then jumped back in the truck and headed for home that evening. He arrived back at our place on Thursday morning. Obviously with a trip that quick, he and his teammates didn’t have any luck in the branding! Todd roped with Wyatt, and John and Kent Hirdes in the open branding. The ladies roped on Friday and were one team shy of making the elimination round on Sunday while Wyatt and Lacy and John and Kyla all roped together in the mixed on Friday night but didn’t have any luck in that one either. Oh well. Next year, guys. At least you all had a good time.
Congratulations to Billy and Dana Aviles and Alex and Laura Naccarato on the successful production of the Hollister PBR that was held last Saturday at Bolado Park. This was their fourth year producing the event and it was almost a complete sellout, which is one of their goals. I was thoroughly impressed with the talent of both the bulls and the bull riders who were competing. Some of the bulls and riders competing were the ones that can be seen on national television on the televised PBR events. Some of the bulls that were brought in were the well known Big Tex, Soulja Boy, Yellow Jacket, Jr. and Vegimite, just to name a few.
Some of the well known riders that competed included Hollister’s own Australian Sensation, Brendon Clark, as well as Luke Snyder, Cody Campbell and Colin McTaggart. Several locals competed in the event as well, such as Derek LaCasa and his cousin Dylan Hice, Josh Daries and Russell Baldwin in the Open event. Local junior bull riders were Brody Sans, Dustin Borba and Cash Kuhn. Congratulations to Brody and to Cash Kuhn for splitting first and second in the event. Congrats also to Tucker Bourdet for winning the mutton busting by outlasting a ton of mutton busters! If you missed the event this year, you missed out on some great entertainment. Congrats again to Billy, Dana, Alex and Laura on another job well done.
Many South County residents headed to Bridgeport over the weekend for the annual Labor Day Ranch Rodeo. Some of those participating from our area included: Vern and Jo Ann Scattini, Hec, Kasey and Taylor Hurley, JW Brewen, Stacey Schmidt and Dean and Nikki Bell. Congrats to Vern and Jo Ann for winning first and third in the mixed branding and to JW and Dean for winning the open branding.
Birthday wishes go out to Taylor Jo who celebrated her 14th birthday while in Bridgeport.
Are you ready for some football? The NFL season is officially under way! Not only am I a Denver Bronco fan, but a Boise State Bronco fan as well and they definitely did not disappoint me last Monday night. That was one of the best games I’ve ever seen. If you’re not a college football fan and you want to become one, jump on the Boise State bandwagon as they are bound to go far this year.
