Robrock retrospective opens
The Blak Sage Gallery will host ‘John Robrock Through the Ages:
a retrospective look and examination of life influences

Oct. 1-28, 727 San Benito St., in Hollister. Robrock, who has an
MFA, teaches drawing and painting at San Benito High School. The
exhibit will feature 50 framed works of art arranged
chronologically, reflecting life phases, including some nude life
drawings. Other common themes in the work include cowboys,
portraits, Native Americans and landscapes. An opening reception
will be held Oct. 9, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Robrock will also offer
demonstrations of portrait drawing techniques, Oct. 16 and 23, from
2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from

Aquatint etchings on display at Mission Gallery

Mission Gallery will display aquatint etchings by Stephen McMillan through Oct. 2, 106 Third St. in San Juan Bautista. The etchings are original prints pulled from copper plates that have been drawn freehand and etched with acid. ‘Corridos! Tales of the Mexican Revolution’

‘Repo! The Genetic Rock Opera’

The Paper Wing Theatre presents “Repo! The Genetic Rock Opera” through Oct. 31, with Friday and Saturday shows at 8 p.m., at 320 Hoffman Avenue, at Lighthouse Avenue in New Monterey. Ansel Adams: Portrait of America

Ansel Adams: Portrait of America is on display at the Monterey Museum of Art-La Mirada located at 720 Via Mirada in Monterey through Oct. 3. The exhibition is the first world-tour stop for the largest collection of iconic photographs to be seen in one place. Museum hours are Wednesdays-Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $5 general admission. Living History Days

The San Juan Bautista State Historic Park will host Living History Day Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Living History Day is hosted on the first Saturday of every month. Meet the characters of early California, including mountain men, Victorian ladies, soldiers and more. There will be craft and other demonstrations, as well as card games. Old-fashioned sodas will be for sale in the saloon for $2 each. The event is sponsored by the Plaza Historic Association. Admission is $3 for adults, children 16 and under are free. International Travel fundraiser

VFW Oktoberfest fundraiser

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post Leslie L. Garrett, in San Juan Bautista, will host an Oktoberfest celebration and fundraiser Oct. 2, at noon, at 58 Monterey St., in San Juan Bautista. The menu will include hendl (chicken,) Schweinsbraten (roast pork,) stecklerfisch (grilled fish on a stick,) Wurstl (sausages,) Brezn (pretzels,) reiberdatschi (potato pancakes,) sauerkraut (cabbage) and other Bavarian delicacies. The meal is $15 with reservations or $19.95 without reservations. The event will start with a traditional festival opening of a 12-gun salute and the tapping of the first keg by a mayor. Battle of the Bands

The San Benito High School Rock Guitar Club will host its annual Battle of the Bands Oct. 2, at the San Benito High School Auditorium, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Performers include Easy Company, Amygdala Maze, One Direction, In Search of Oblivion, Burned on the Stake, Tragic Comeback and Fugu. The students will compete for a free recording opportunity with Tool Shed Studios. Tickets are $5 at the high school payment center or $7 at the door.

Northern California Renaissance Faire

The Northern California Renaissance Faire will be held at Casa de Fruta, off Hwy. 152, weekends through Oct. 17, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. There will be a different theme each weekend including Bacchanal Masquerade, Celtic Weekend and Oktoberfest. There are a variety of stages and arenas that will provide entertainment such as Punch and Judy Shows, jousting, sword fighting and more. Vendors will sell a variety of foods and merchandise. There will be a Celtic rock concert at 6 p.m. on Saturdays, free with the cost of faire admission. This week’s performance will be by the Young Dubliners, Molly’s Revenge and Wicked Tinkers. Great Sand Castle Contest

The 50th annual Great Sand Castle Contest will be held at Carmel Beach, between 10th and 12th, Oct. 3. The event is cosponsored by the American Institute of Architects- Monterey Bay Chapter and the city of Carmel-by-the-sea. The theme will be announced two weeks before the event. Registration takes place on the beach before the event, and builders can begin work on their castles at 8 a.m. Judging will take place from noon to 2 p.m.

Pro Am bridge game

There will be a Pro Am bridge potluck, at the Dunne Park Clubhouse, Oct. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. At this special event, Pros (300 masterpoints or more) will play those with less points. The event is meant to be a fun and educational event to share with people more about the Hollister bridge clubs. Gavilan College Health Fair

Gavilan College will host its 17th annual “High on Health” faire Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Gavilan College Student Center, at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., in Gilroy. Attendance is free and the event is open to the public. More than 51 representatives from local organizations such as Planned Parenthood, South Valley Pregnancy Center, Compassion Pregnancy Services and STD Clinic, Breast Cancer Connections, Community Solutions and more will be on hand. The YMCA of San Benito County will host the Harlem Starz basketball team for a game against one of the Hollister city recreation department’s adult basketball league teams Oct. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Marguerite Maze Middle School. Roy Eaton gives piano recitals

Roy Eaton, of New York City, will give two piano recitals on the Monterey Peninsula. The first will be Oct. 8, at 8 p.m., at the Center for Spiritual Living, 400 West Franklin St., in Monterey. The second will be Oct. 10, at 3 p.m., at the Carmel Valley Community Chapel, at Paso Hondo and Village Drive. Both concerts have a suggested donation of $20 per person. Bill Staines performs in Aromas

Folk music icon Bill Staines will perform at the Aromas Community Grange, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m., at the corner of Rose Avenue and Bardue Street, in Aromas. Coyote Creek Bird Walk

Jane Haley, a National Park Service docent and Wildlife Education Rehabilitation Center volunteer will lead a bird walk Oct. 9, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. along the Coyote Creek, north of Morgan Hill. Participants will have an opportunity to observe migratory birds as well as discover an appreciation of local birds, their habitat and ecological importance. Point Sur Ghost Tours

Two special Ghost Tours benefiting the restoration of Point Sur Lightstation in Big Sur will be held Oct. 23 (full moon) and Oct. 30. For a donation of $60, the evening of ghostly fun will begin with a walking tour to the lighthouse in time for the sunset; followed by refreshments in the barn; Point Sur ghost stories told by professional actor/docent Kevin Hanstick; access to the spooky Triplex; and dessert and beverages in the Visitors’ Center.
