For the second time against Monterey, the San Benito boys water polo team posted 19 goals en route to a 19-10 victory against the Toreadores on Wednesday in Tri-County Athletic League action.

The Balers are now 4-1 in the TCAL.

San Benito previously defeated Monterey 19-15 in the season opener at the Monterey Bay Invitational, which was played in Hollister.

In that match, the Balers never grabbed a sizable lead, leading 5-4 after the first quarter and 10-8 at halftime.

But on Wednesday in league play, San Benito jumped ahead 6-1 in the first quarter and never looked back. Head coach Tom Agan cycled in many substitutes following the opening period, and the second-stringers competed against visiting Monterey.

The Balers led 11-4 at halftime.

“We were able to sub a lot, from the first quarter on,” Agan said. “The second string came in, and we were able to play even with them.”

While keeper Trevor Agan recorded six saves in net, Josh Schafer led the Balers with six goals, while Nick Angulo added four scores. Tyler Reuther and Carlos Huerta each had three goals apiece, Danny Jarrett added a pair of goals, and Joe Larson had another score.

In other news, the San Benito junior varsity defeated Monterey 12-1.

The varsity Balers, meanwhile, will compete in the South Valley Polo Fest in Morgan Hill on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, San Benito will square off against Mitty at 1 p.m., and will later play Kingsburg at 3 p.m. Matches will be held at Live Oak High, and will continue into Saturday.
