Behind 15 kills from Katherine Breger and 26 assists from Raelynn Heredia, the San Benito High girls volleyball team defeated visiting Alisal in three sets on Tuesday night, 25-13, 25-10, 25-23.
Sara Yamasaki added 13 digs for the Balers, who improve to 5-6 in the Tri-County Athletic League, 16-18 overall.
Head coach Dean Askanas noted the easy wins in both Game 1 and Game 2, in which San Benito won by 12 and 15 points, respectively, and the complete 180-degree turn in Game 3, in which the Balers won by just two points.
In that final set, Alisal actually led 23-17 before San Benito rifled off eight straight points to close out the match.
“When a team wants to push and fight, we need to push back,” said Askanas, who added that San Benito’s “push back” mentality has not always been a problem this season.
“But in some of our losses, it was just a matter of not pushing back hard enough,” he added. “It’s a little demon we’re working against. We’ll keep working on it.”
Tuesday’s win over Alisal followed a 2-3 performance for the Balers at Spikefest II in Milpitas. In pool play, San Benito lost to Burlingame but picked up wins over Evergreen Valley and Sacred Heart Cathedral, the best win of the season, Askanas said.
In the Silver Division, however, the Balers went 0-2 in matches against Aptos and North Salinas.
San Benito will host its regular season finale on Thursday against Everett Alvarez. Match time is 6:30 p.m.
