The San Benito County Elections Office today counted about half of the 2,800 mail-in ballots remaining, while there are another 500 or so provisional ballots to be tallied.

Scattini after Election Day trailed Montanez by 14 votes. With the release of today’s results, Scattini had 342 votes or 36.7 percent to 332 votes or 35.6 percent for Montanez. A third candidate in the race faces an insurmountable disadvantage at this point, as Estevan Guzman had 253 votes and 27.2 percent, according to the results.

Head elections official Joe Paul Gonzalez expects to release more numbers later today, and the rest of the ballots should be counted by the end of Monday, he said.

Scattini was the district’s councilman from 2002 to 2006. He and Montanez, an accountant, are vying to succeed Councilwoman Eugenia Sanchez.

In other relatively close races, Jerry Muenzer sustained the 104-vote advantage over opponent Phil Fortino that he held after counting was done Election Day. Muenzer had 1,979 votes to 1,875 for Fortino, according to the recent results.

In the sheriff’s race, incoming Sheriff-elect Darren Thompson extended his margin over Pat Turturici. Thompson had 7,663 votes or 56.8 percent to Turturici’s 5,760 votes or 42.7 percent.
