Mission Trail Athletic League action Thursday night in
Monterey.

Despite taking the first two games against Santa Catalina, the Anzar girls volleyball team could simply not close it out. Going the distance for the sixth time this year, the Hawks dropped a five-set loss (25-16, 25-21, 16-25, 20-25, 9-15) to the Cougars in Mission Trail Athletic League action Thursday night in Monterey.
Anzar is now 8-6 in the MTAL.
The five-set loss for the Hawks comes less than a month after Anzar delivered a five-set win over Santa Catalina at home. Anzar has also played five-set matches this season against King City, Carmel, Pacific Grove and Stevenson, going 3-3 in those matches.
On Thursday, Anzar grabbed Game 1 25-16, then took Game 2 25-21 before dropping the next three sets. Alex Flores led the Hawks with 13 kills, 12 assists, 11 digs and a pair of service aces, while teammate Jessica Frusetta added 19 digs and eight kills.
Carly Johnson had 25 digs in the match, Sydnee Masuen added 20 assists, and Brittany Hogeman had 10 digs.
The Hawks still have one more scheduled match in the regular season. Anzar will host Soledad on Friday night in San Juan Bautista. Match time is 6 p.m.
The Central Coast Section playoffs, meanwhile, will begin next week, with the playoff seedings scheduled to be announced on Saturday.
