Happy New year everyone! I hope you all had a safe and happy holiday season. At least we can all be happy that Christmas was a wet one. Rain showers poured all over South County on Christmas day putting smiles on many faces.

We held our annual Christmas Eve gathering at our house last Wednesday evening. Either we’re going to have to add on to our house or move the party outside as it keeps getting bigger each year! This year we hosted 64 people for dinner. After dinner, Santa stopped by to bring gifts to all the kids who attended. He also had some special gifts for some adults. Hec Hurley received a miniature donkey (live) while his wife Kasey received an adorable 10-week-old Yorkie puppy. The best present of all though came when Santa (a.k.a. Nessen Schmidt Jr.), called up his girlfriend, Jessica, to sit on his lap. When Jessica tried to sit on his lap, he instead sat her in the chair while he got down on one knee and presented her with a beautiful engagement ring in front of everyone. Needless to say, it was a complete surprise for all and her answer was yes. So looks like next year we’ll have Santa and Mrs. Claus at our house for Christmas! Congratulations Ness and Jessica!

Jeff, Jean and Steve Schmidt were missing from our house this year as they traveled to Truckee to spend Christmas with the Popnoe family. They were all celebrating their last Christmas in Truckee as Jeff and Shari will be moving to the Hollister area this summer after Melissa graduates from high school in June.

The O’Connor family celebrated Christmas eve at the home of Kanani Barbree. The Flores family attended the gathering there, then, they shared Christmas morning together at the home of Kek and Lucy Flores. The O’Connors than shared Christmas dinner with Virginia in Bitterwater.

We had a very wet Christmas day as we were gifted with 0.40 hundredths of rain. The O’Connors and Scattinis reported the same rain totals at their place for the day.

The big news in King City last week was the budget cuts that were put into effect at the grade schools and Chalone Peaks Middle School. Unfortunately, the busing will be eliminated as well as the sports programs. As unfortunate as these cuts are, I am glad to see that the board has taken immediate action to try to remedy their financial situation. If only the high school could take some immediate action as well, they may not be in the financial situation they are in as well. Holly Casey, board member, is right on as she stated that busing is not a mandated program and if parents value their children’s education and future, they will find a way to get their children to school. That statement brought on some criticism from some parents, but, folks, it’s time to step up and start being accountable for your own children. Too many people rely on schools to take care of their kids, be it transportation, free lunches, sports, etc. Folks have been given way too much from schools and government, it’s time people stop taking and start doing. Hopefully 2009 will bring more financial stability to the King City School Districts.

The Ken Kline Christmas Classic Basketball Tournament was held on Monday and Tuesday at King City High School. That will end pre-season for the Lady Mustangs and league will begin next week. Don’t forget about the Chalone Peaks sports program donation drive that is taking place right now as well. Don’t let budget cuts end of their season. Anyone out there who has played sports can relate to this, any amount of donation, even $5 to $10 will add up and help these kids out. You can make your donation to any Chalone Peaks basketball player, or drop off your donation to the Garden House.

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and here’s wishing you all a happy, healthy and prosperous 2009. If you have any news you’d like to share, be sure to give me a call or e-mail me at we********@*ol.com.
