Despite their green attire on St. Patrick’s Day, the visiting Alisal Trojans had very little luck Tuesday night in trying to dispose of the San Benito Haybalers.
Behind 28 assists from Adrian Rodriguez and 10 kills from Erik Rodriguez, the ‘Balers opened Tri-County Athletic League play at Hollister’s Mattson Gym with a quick and easy victory over Alisal in three games (25-5, 25-11, 25-15).
Roy Powell and Brian Hawks each contributed six kills apiece for San Benito, which improves to 1-0 in the TCAL and 6-3 overall with the win.
“The first game we dominated,” San Benito head coach Luis Espinoza said. “It seems to be our M.O., that we dominate the first game. We came out guns blazing and ready to hit.”
San Benito will be just one of 16 teams at this weekend’s Hammering and Roofing Seminar tournament in Willow Glen, set to begin Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
Other teams expected to be in attendance include Bellarmine, St. Francis of Mountain View, Seaside, Saratoga, Valley Christian, Los Gatos, Monterey, Gilroy, Alisal, Aptos, Harbor, Harker, Mitty, Serra and Homestead.
San Benito High Baseball
The San Benito High baseball team continued its control over Alisal Tuesday when it defeated the host Trojans 6-0 behind five strong innings on the hill from starter Jacob Eichhorn.
Eichhorn allowed just four hits and struck out seven in his starting stint, which saw Tyler Provost (1IP, 0H, 0R, 1K) and Bryan Granger (1IP, 0R, 0H) finish the game in relief.
San Benito, which defeated Alisal 15-1 on Saturday but fell to Palma 4-3 last Friday, improves to 3-1 in the Tri-County Athletic League and 7-3-1 overall
San Benito will be off Friday, but will return Saturday in a non-league game against visiting Aptos. First pitch is at 12 p.m.
San Benito High Track
The San Benito High track and field team nearly ran away with a sweep at the varsity and junior varsity level last week when it hosted Alisal in the Tri-County Athletic League opener.
Although Hollister’s JV boys were narrowly defeated 71-62, the JV girls dominated 108-27, the varsity girls did the same 117-28, and the varsity boys continued the trend with a 93-39 victory.
Although complete results were unavailable, girls coach Laurie Cottrell did highlight freshman Melissa Castro, who finished first in the 200, the 300 hurdles and the high jump.
Boys varsity coach Iran White said Justin Williams set a personal record in the 100, with an approximate time of 11.23 seconds.
San Benito is enjoying a bye this week but will return this weekend at the West Valley Relays, which will be held at Westmont High School in Campbell on Saturday at 8 a.m.
San Benito High Tennis
The San Benito High boys tennis team defeated visiting Everett Alvarez 6-1 Tuesday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club in Hollister.
San Benito’s scheduled match against Palma on Thursday was held after The Pinnacle’s press time.
The Haybalers will visit Salinas Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
San Benito High Swim
Behind Central Coast Section qualifying times from Brandon Drogemuller, the ‘Baler boys easily defeated North Salinas 140-30 last Friday, while Demi Gatrell, Celina Stotler and Shelli Reed led the Lady ‘Balers to an even more resounding win, 155-24.
San Benito (2-0) will now visit their biggest rivals over the last two seasons: Salinas. The ‘Balers and Cowboys will square off in the pool on Friday at Hartnell College at 3:30 p.m.
