Corrales looks to state final

Only one fighter remains in the way of a state finals bid for Hollister boxer Tony Corrales, who won by unanimous decision over Clovis’ Paul Cano at the Central Coast Golden Gloves finals last week in Stockton.

Owner and trainer of Bull Dog Boxing Gym Zeke Lopez said Corrales’ fight wasn’t necessarily pretty, as Cano had a tendency to hold and run.

Nevertheless, Corrales emerged with the unanimous win.

“It was a good fight. Tony won,” Lopez said. “But [Cano] was holding him and grabbing him and running. Tony would grab him and hit him, but the guy would run away.”

For the first two rounds, at least, Lopez said Corrales was “falling asleep in the ring” as a result of his opponent’s actions. As for the third and final round, though, “Tony just started wailing on him.”

“He did a lot better in the third round,” Lopez said.

Corrales, 18, will now advance to regionals at the Westside Boxing Club in San Mateo on March 21 where he will square off against Watsonville’s Jonathan Garcia.

Garcia, a southpaw who has trained at the Bull Dog Boxing Gym before, is approximately 17- to 18-years-old, Lopez said.

“We’ve sparred with him before and we’ve trained with him,” Lopez added. “We know what we’re gonna do.”

Wrestling Balers complete CIF run

San Benito’s only remaining wrestler on Day 2 of the CIF-State Wrestling Championships was 145-pounder Josh Ramirez.

But needing just one more win in order to place in the top eight of his weight class, Ramirez fell just short.

Wrestling against Desmond Rios of Chico-Pleasant Valley, Ramirez lost by a narrow 10-8 decision on Saturday morning at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.

Ramirez, the Central Coast Section champion at 145 pounds, finished the state meet with a 3-2 record.

Meanwhile, San Benito’s Junior Davila at 119 pounds won his opening match by a 13-8 decision over Poway’s Jesse Taylor on Friday, but lost in the round of 16 by a 4-1 decision to East Bakersfield’s Peter Gonzalez.

Davila finished with a 2-2 record.

At 160 pounds, Enrique Lucatero lost his first match to De La Salle’s Luke Sheridan, the North Coast champion, by a 10-6 decision. He then won three straight matches in the consolation bracket – he beat Bonita Vista’s Nick Barnes 9-5, defeated Ukiah’s John Escamilla 8-4, and upended, and upset, Palo Alto’s Patrick Sheehan 4-2.

The senior 160-pounder finished with a 3-2 record.
