In California, state law requires children to ride in a car seat or booster seat until they are 6 years old or weigh at least 60 lbs.
The checkup ran from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and an hour in, a line had formed of families with small children.
Volunteers in striped safety vests gathered in the K Mart parking lot and a CHP officer reviewed with them a proper installation.
