Mickie Luna and other local members of the League of United
Latin American Citizens paid special attention to Tuesday’s planned
launch of NASA’s shuttle Discovery.
One of the astronauts to participate in the launch is Jose
Hernandez, a member of LULAC who grew up in Stockton, working in
farm fields. He will serve as the mission specialist for the
launch. Hernandez was selected as a NASA astronaut in 2004, and
completed his initial training in 2006.

NASA’s STS-128 mission will last about 13 days and is slated to deliver 7+ tons of supplies, equipment and hardware for mission crewmembers on the International Space Station orbiting the earth.
Mickie Luna, president of San Benito County LULAC Council #2890, knows Hernandez from his time as a volunteer speaker to LULAC Youth while she served as state president of California LULAC. Her father came from the same small town of Tiquitaco, Michoacan, in Mexico as Hernadez’ family.
Those interested can follow Jose’s journey through space by going online to receive his “tweets” (his entries are in Spanish) to www.twitter.com/Astro_Jose.
San Benito County LULAC members join their fellow LULAC members in congratulating Jose and his family and his LULAC family of Stockton LULAC Council #2060.
Michael Perez, past president of Stockton Council has obtained NASA as a sponsor of the local youth council, and San Benito LULAC has now been invited to participate as well. According to a LULAC press release the hope is to see local youth embark in such a program and someday see them going up in space as Jose Hernandez did on Tuesday.
