Cooler: Charge fees for emergency responses?

Panelists answered the following: Should Hollister charge fees for fire department responses involving negligence such as vehicle accidents, fires or water incidents?
Bill Mifsud: No, we are being nickeled and dimed by the city. This is over the top. Why now? The city should look closer at their budget and give us taxpayers a break.
Mary Zanger: No. The very reason we organize ourselves into a group called Civic Government is to help one another in unconditional service regardless of circumstance. Most importantly this is where we step into the other’s shoes before we can judge.  
Nants Foley: I am in total awe of the great job our fire department does. I am against fees because I would hate for someone to hesitate to call 911 in case of emergency because they were afraid it might cost them money. The fire department provides life-saving response. I would like to keep it that way. 
Cesar Flores: Yes! Negligent calls can use up resources that are needed for real emergencies. Individuals should be held responsible for their actions. Maybe paying for their foolish actions will make them take better notice of what they are doing. 
Ruth Erickson: Hollister residents should not pay for someone else’s gross negligence. Fees paid by those causing various problems will enable the fire department to update some of their outdated equipment for the benefit of all. Perhaps the police and sheriff’s department should follow suit. The public needs the opportunity to discuss this for future ramifications.
