School starts for some South County students
The hot August nights are upon us in South County. Although it
hasn’t been too awful hot this year, we’ve actually had a very mild
summer, hopefully an indication of a really wet winter. Now that
we’re midway through August, several schools have already started
back in session and football practices are under way.

The hot August nights are upon us in South County. Although it hasn’t been too awful hot this year, we’ve actually had a very mild summer, hopefully an indication of a really wet winter. Now that we’re midway through August, several schools have already started back in session and football practices are under way.

Hollister Schools are back in session as they began their school year on Aug. 15. The majority of King City schools start back on the 31 with only a few starting back on the 15. I remember when I was a kid. We started back to school after Labor Day and got out the first week of June. Times sure have changed!

The Monterey County Cattlemen’s Association hosted their annual Ranch Rodeo and Roping last weekend at the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds in King City. The organization had a calcutta and cocktail party on Saturday evening from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and some people bid on their favorite team in the ranch rodeo on Sunday.

The 19th Hole Ranch Rodeo will be taking place the weekend of Sept. 12-13, 2009 at the Fox Creek Ranch in Tres Pinos. You can pick up entries at the 19th Hole Bar and Grill or contact either Wyatt Bourdet or Carlos Castillo.

The Monterey County Fair ended last week and the San Benito County Fair is right around the corner. Entries for the fair close Aug. 28. We didn’t receive any entries in the mail this year as the fair is trying to go green with entries being downloaded off the Internet. If you don’t have access to the Internet, you can contact the fairgrounds and they will send you the entry in the mail.

Birthday wishes go out to Jo Ann Scattini who celebrated her birthday on Aug. 18. We had a small roping/barbecue for her to help her celebrate.

I’ve only heard of one big buck story so far this season. Andy Barrington got a big buck on opening day.
