A local public works official on the scene said he has “no idea” what caused the break, while the block remained closed from traffic shortly after noon.
“We’re trying to diagnose it,” said Hollister’s Utility Supervisor Henry Gonzales. “We’re still in the process of isolating the problem. There’s really no way of telling why it broke.”
Around 11 a.m., water could be seen coming from a manhole in the middle of San Benito Street at the intersection of Hawkins Street, along with water from other utility service locations on the east side of the street. The brown water was flowing north and was draining as far away as Seventh Street.
City workers were turning off valves in the street to stop the water and shortly thereafter closed down the block from Hawkins Street to South Street.
