Morgan Hill native John Ellis shot an even 72 Wednesday to open the second stage of the PGA Tour’s Qualifying Tournament at the Deerwood Golf Club in Kingwood, Texas.

The score positions Ellis in a tie for 39th place overall among some 75 golfers. With three rounds still to be played, though, Ellis will need to figure into the top 19 qualifying positions in order to advance to the third and final stage, which this year will be held at the Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., from Dec. 2-7.

After the first round, the top-19 cut was at 3-under.

Brandt Jobe of Westlake, Texas, was the current leader after the first day when he carded a 7-under 65.

Other notable golfers from Wednesday’s round included Kevin Chappell of Fresno, who sits in 54th at 2-over, as well as Jim Seki of Palo Alto, who is currently in 64th at 3-over.

As for Ellis, this is his fourth trip to the second stage of the PGA Tour’s Qualifying Tournament, also known as Q-School. He competed in the second stage at the Deerwood Golf Club last year, but fell nine strokes short of advancing to the final stage.

Q-School is a three-stage event where golfers from around the world compete to earn their PGA Tour card.

A Live Oak grad and Gavilan College alum, Ellis qualified to the second stage after he carded an 11-under 277 (71-72-65-69) earlier this month at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister, a stage-one site.

On Thursday, Ellis will tee off from the first hole at 9 a.m., with partners Brian Duncan (-5) of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Hank Kim (-3) of Joneboro, Ga.
