Around the green is a perfect place to “manufacture” shots by adding or decreasing loft to a club, which can be accomplished by opening or closing the face. You can also get the ball to spin one way or another by changing the angle the club approaches the ball. You may think this stuff is just for the pros, but realistically, this is the area you can be like a pro.
Let’s face it, the chance of hitting a 300-yard drive is pretty slim for most. But making a chip shot stop on a dime is doable with some practice.
Let’s talk about adding loft to your club to make the shot drop and stop. First, you want to lay your wedge open so it is lying on the heel of the club’s sole. This will add loft to your shot. Secondly, open your stance so the clubface is aiming at the target. Too often, people just open the clubface without adjusting where their body is aiming and the ball goes right of the target.
Take the club on an outside to inside path and slide the club right under the ball. The result, with the added loft, will be a high shot that lands very soft. Since you aren’t making direct contact with the ball, the swing will need to be longer to produce any distance at all.
With a little practice, you will be called a magician in your group.
