The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post Leslie L. Garratt, of San Juan Bautista, held a ceremony in remembrance of Pearl Harbor Day on Sunday, Dec. 6.
The event, which began at 8 a.m., was designed to “honor and remember veterans who have given their lives so that we may live in freedom,” according to a statement from the VFW.
Breakfast was served following the ceremony, which was open to the public. The commemoration recognizes the Dec. 7, 1941 attack on Pear Harbor, Hawaii, which propelled the United States into World War II. Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is held each Dec. 7 to honor the more than 2,400 people who died during the Japanese attack.
The VFW is a national association of men and women who have served the U.S. in wars, campaigns and expeditions on foreign soil or in hostile waters.
Another ceremony to honor veterans will be held Dec. 12 at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella.
Dubbed “Wreaths Across America,” the holiday wreath-laying ceremony will be held to honor veterans of each branch of the military, as well as the Merchant Marines, prisoners of war and those still missing in action.
The 9 a.m. event will be held at the cemetery located at 332053 W. McCabe Rd. in Santa Nella. Representatives from the military as well as veterans and their families will be on hand.
The wreaths are being donated by the Worcester Wreath Company in tribute to veterans laid to rest at the Veterans’ Administration’s 130 national cemeteries and state veterans’ cemeteries. The Civil Air Patrol is coordinating the ceremonies around the country.
