The shortest day of the year is also one of the most anticipated
in San Juan Bautista, where gatherers hope for sun as dawn breaks
at the Mission. On the Winter Solstice, Dec. 21, the sun, if not
blocked out by clouds, shines a beam of light down the aisle of the
Mission and onto the tabernacle, as shown above. A John the Baptist
statue, above right, awaits the sun’s arrival during last year’s
solstice.
