Hollister Police Chief David Westrick has a blog and his first entry recommends bold action, as in tightened regulations with social media.
Westrick on Friday launched a blog at this website: http://chiefwestrick.blogspot.com/
In it, he lauds State Sen. Anthony Cannella for his revenge porn legislation, along with State Assemblyman Luis Alejo and Congressman Sam Farr, for their support of San Benito County through legislative efforts of their own.
He then cites several regional cases involving abuse of social media and recommends steps for legislators to take in order to crack down on the problems.
Particularly, he suggested shortening the window for required responses from social media companies to law enforcement agencies from 10 days to 48 hours. Westrick also recommended potential fines against social media companies if they fail to comply.
Westrick wrote: “What I would propose to our elected officials is that they help provide the necessary tools for law enforcement to be able to act in a more timely manner and obtain evidence quicker in these types of incidents in social media. What I’m saying is, we need a Social Media Responsibility Act.
Westrick has been active on social media in recent years. He also launched the partnership with Nixle, which posts public alerts online along with sending emails and text messages to those who sign up for the free service.
