Although it “dominated” the first half and carried a 1-0 lead with just 15 minutes to play, the San Benito boys soccer team couldn’t keep Saratoga away on Saturday in the Homestead Christmas Cup tournament at De Anza College, and lost by a 3-1 margin.
After a scoreless first half, the Balers took a 1-0 lead after Brian Cruz scored on a direct kick in the 55th minute. But Saratoga tied the game at the 66th minute, scored the go-ahead goal in the 70th minute, then added a little insurance in the 77th minute.
“We pretty much dominated all first half and we had possession of the ball for much of the first half,” San Benito head coach Ramiro Ramos said. “The second half started the same.
“But towards the end … we started playing kick ball. As soon as the ball went up in the air, instead of settling the ball and doing what we had been doing in the beginning, we started doing what they were doing.”
Ramos said the Balers began playing Saratoga’s game, which utilized speed and the long pass.
“All they kept doing was sending the ball to their center forward,” Ramos said of Saratoga. The team’s center forward scored two of Saratoga’s three goals, despite being double teamed by San Benito.
The Balers, who are now 2-3-1 overall this season, will continue play in the Christmas Cup on Monday against Evergreen Valley. Kick-off is 4:30 p.m., at Oak Grove High in San Jose.
