Gavilan lost 76-61 at San Jose City College Saturday afternoon after the Jaguars went 28-for-36 from the charity stripe.
“I didn’t like their mental approach to the game, “said Gavilan coach Tito Addison. “I thought we missed a ton of easy shots and then we did the cardinal sin to that by letting it affect our defense.”
The Rams missed several short jump shots in the game, and the Jaguars hustled the ball down the court, forcing Gavilan to foul to prevent easy shots. Gavilan was forced to try to play catch-up for most of the game.
The Rams (8-17, 2-3 conf.) dominated play in the first five minutes,taking an 8-3 advantage. Gavilan held a brief 14-12 edge, but San Jose City (13-10, 2-3 Conf.) took the lead about eight minutes into the game and never trailed again.
The Rams stayed in contention though at the end of the first with an 8-0 run. With seconds left in the half, John Williams pulled down a defensive rebound and passed off to Ben Chambliss, who beat the buzzer with a layup to draw the Rams within 34-30.San Jose City led by as much as 12 in the first half.
“I thought we did a good job of closing the half down and cutting it to four,” Addison said. “But once again you can’t make baskets at this level, you won’t be able to compete. I thought the guys did the right things. They made the right passes at times, but you can’t miss open shots at this level.”
The Rams got within one point early in the second half, but San Jose City then went on an 11-2 before Jessie Lobue broke it up with a three-pointer.
Lobue had the hot hand in the second half, scoring 16 of his game-high 20 points.
He had a pair of dunks in the game, one off a steal by Stephen Vargas in the first and one off a feed from John Williams in the second.
“Shots that we usually make, it’s frustrating,” Addison said. “We didn’t make plays either. There were a lot of loose balls hanging around, off the rim, in the middle of the court that we didn’t just didn’t get to, didn’t have the guts to get to today. We didn’t play with enough passion. We didn’t make the second effort today.”
San Jose City big man Isaiah Johnson (6-foot-6) led the Jaguars with 19 points. Quinston Reggins had 16 and Kenny Mcgowen had 15. Javin Charot, a former Gilroy High player, didn’t have any points in limited playing time for San Jose City.
Gavilan will be playing visiting Hartnell on Wednesday.
