San Juan Bautista voters may get another chance to consider the growth control and sales tax ballot measures they defeated in November 2007.

City Manager Jan McClintock told the Free Lance today that council members have directed her to place a sales tax increase on the June 3 ballot. Measure C, a similar sales tax increase from 8 percent to 8.5 percent, was defeated 52 percent to 48 percent. But McClintock said council members hope some changes – including the addition of a citizens oversight committee to examine the spending of the extra funds – would convince voters.

In the November election, locals also defeated Measure C, which would have increased the city’s growth cap from 1 percent to 3 percent. Council members haven’t made it clear whether they want the growth initiative back on the ballot, too, McClintock said. She plans to ask for clarification at tonight’s meeting, and council members should make a final decision in February.

City leaders have said both measures are needed to aid the financially struggling town.
