HOLLLISTER – The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is seeking volunteers of all ages to learn tax law and help prepare tax returns for middle and low income taxpayers. Volunteers will receive free training from the Internal Revenue Service and are asked to give a minimum commitment of 40 hours over a 10-week period. Local training will begin later this month. E-waste recycling event

TRES PINOS – An e-waste recycling event will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the San Benito County Fairgrounds, 9000 Airline Hwy. There is no charge to participate in the event, and no limit to the number of items per person.

Items which can be dropped off during this free program include: LCD televisions and monitors; laptop computers; plasma screens; televisions; computer towers; printers; DVD players; copy machines; fax machines; calculators, keyboards; stereo systems; speakers; computer mice; telephones; cell phones; and VCRs. Monthly blood drive scheduled

American Legion Post 69 to hold meeting

HOLLISTER – The American Legion San Benito Post 69 invites all veterans and veteran family members to become a member. The post’s first meeting of the year will be held Thursday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building on San Benito Street in room 204. Refreshments will follow. Volunteers needed for advocate training

GILROY – Community Solutions is offering domestic violence and sexual assault volunteer advocate training beginning Tuesday, Jan. 22. The training lasts six weeks on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and three full Saturdays. At the end of the session, volunteers will be state of California certified.

Community Solutions provides crisis intervention to more than 500 survivors of sexual assault or domestic violence each year. The program also offers shelter to battered women and their children and legal advocacy to women in need. Free income tax service available

HOLLISTER – The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Tax-Aide program offers free personal tax counseling and preparation assistance to all taxpayers of low to middle income, with special attention to those ages 60 and older. Beginning Tuesday, Feb. 12 through Thursday, April 10, volunteers will be available by appointment only to those who need help preparing their taxes. Appointments can be made on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m. Appointments will be held at the Hollister Community Center, 300 West St.

Participants should bring in all tax documents they receive in the mail, last year’s tax return and all relevant information on income and expenses. Volunteer counselors are not trained to assist in preparing tax returns that report business, rental or partnership income. Gavilan offers inspection exam prep course

GILROY – Gavilan College will offer a residential building inspection-ICC certification exam prep course on Saturdays, Feb. 23-April 19, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at its Gilroy campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd. This 40-hour course will prepare participants to pass the International Code Council’s residential building inspector of 1-2 family dwelling exam. Passing of this exam will give international certification with a three year certification by the ICC.

Crafters needed

HOLLISTER – The Ladies Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign War Post #9242 is looking for crafters for their spring craft show, March 15. The show will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St.

Cost for vendors is $40 for an 8 by 10 foot space. A table and two chairs will be available if needed.
