Hollister, San Juan and San Benito County eligible for Prop 1B
funds
The state is ready to allocate more than $2 million in funds for local road projects from a statewide ballot proposition approved by voters in November 2006.

The California Department of Finance has informed cities and counties – all of which are eligible for the money – that it is accepting applications for 2007-08 disbursements. The state will allocate the funds in two allocations, for fiscal years 2007-08 and 2008-09. Prop 1B provided $19.93 billion for transportation priorities, including $2 billion for local road and street projects, according to the department of finance Web site.

Dollar amounts for each city and county are based on a formula taking into account population and the number of vehicles registered in jurisdictions.

San Benito County is set to receive $1.12 million. Hollister would get $597,000. And San Juan Bautista would receive the minimum amount for cities – $400,000.

The funds can go toward a broad range of road projects, though there are some restrictions, said Hollister City Manager Clint Quilter. To get the money, municipalities must submit an application that includes a list of projects, descriptions of projects, amounts for each, completion dates and the “useful life” of the ideas, according to the department of finance.

Hollister officials have not discussed where to spend the money. Quilter said those talks will occur soon.
