Who runs the site: The site is run by Ogden Publications, a company that publishes magazines and books that run the gamut from sustainability, rural lifestyles and farm memorabilia. Other sites include Natural Home, the Herb Companion and Utne, a site that reprints articles from alternative media.
Pros: The site has tons of information on how to live green at home. The main topics include renewable energy, green homes, organic gardening, green transportation and more.
The articles are easy to read and include photos to break up the text. Readers can write in with questions for experts, but it is the articles that are the center of the site.
Each section includes tips on do-it-yourself projects or ways to use the information. The real food section includes plenty of healthy recipes from no-knead bread to oatmeal recipes.
In the future, the site will have a handful of blogs so readers can learn about topics from people who are actually living the green lifestyle. But for now that section of the Web site is covered with a “coming soon” banner.
Cons: The site has tons of information and can be hard to navigate. If a topic isn’t immediately found under one of the main subheads, there is a search feature, but it returns many articles that aren’t really on target. A search for energy efficient light bulbs returned articles on phantom loads, refrigerators and general energy efficiency.
The articles tend to be long. For instance one article on the top 20 tomato varieties in the U.S. requires readers to click to six different pages to read the entire article.
In addition, there is an ad for a shopping site connected to Mother Earth News that kept popping up a new window, even when the ad wasn’t clicked.
