The Gavilan Rams softball team went 2-1 at the West Valley College Tournament last weekend, beating Mission College and Mendocino College 12-2 and 6-4, respectively.

In their first game against Mission, Gavilan plated five runs in the third and six more in the fourth en route to the shortened five-inning game.

Danielle Scibuola had three singles, three runs and two stolen bases, Mikhaela Osuna added three RBIs and a triple, and Alicia Reese had three singles and two RBIs.

The Rams connected for 15 hits total, and got more than enough offense for pitcher Cristine Vasquez, who allowed one earned run on three hits.

In their second game Saturday, Gavilan won a far closer contest, outlasting Mendocino 6-4. Starting pitcher Danielle Hernandez had a perfect game heading into the sixth inning when Mendocino scored four runs. However, the Rams had already worked out to a 6-0 lead, and eventually took the game with a two-run edge.

Osuna and Vasquez powered Gavilan with a solo and a two-run homer, respectively. Audra Brown also added an RBI triple.

“On Saturday, we had a great day,” manager Nikki Dequin said. “On Sunday, we didn’t play like we can play.”

The Rams’ lone loss came in the third game Sunday, when they fell to Los Medanos 3-2.

Los Medanos, however, never recorded a hit.

“We committed a mental mistake and an error,” Dequin said. “That gave them a couple of runs … We had a lot of missed opportunities. We got outplayed, unfortunately.”

Hernandez allowed three runs on no hits through six innings of work. Amanda Rosevear had a two-run RBI double for Gavilan in the sixth inning.

The Rams were scheduled to play Contra Costa on Sunday, although the game was deemed a no contest after Contra Coast was unable to field a team.

Gavilan is now 26-15 overall, 8-7 in the Coast Conference – South.

They’ll play three away games this week: at San Francisco City College on Tuesday, at the College of San Mateo on Wednesday, and at Foothill on Thursday.

SAN BENITO TRACK AND FIELD

At Mountain View, the San Benito boys track team took fifth out of 34 teams at the St. Francis Invitational Saturday, compiling 34 points and finishing behind Mitty (51 points), St. Francis (52), Clovis West (60.5) and Mater Dei (81).

“It was pretty good. We worked hard that week, so we kind of weren’t as fresh,” boys coach Iran White said. “It’s a long season. If every week you let up … you get to the end of the season and that’s a lot of hard work that you didn’t do.”

The Lady ‘Balers took 10th place with 23 points, although coach Laurie Cottrell said they did not bring a full team.

Nevertheless, Cottrell noted the many personal records set by the girls team, including Courtney Allen’s 11:14.13 in the 3,000 meters.

“She ran an amazing race,” Cottrell said. The coach also noted Kristina Vasquez’ PR in the 3,000, as she clocked a 12:07.03.

In the field events, PRs included Arielle Rianda in the triple jump (28-04), and Lauren Ademek in the triple jump (29-01 1/2) and the high jump (4-08).

“So she’s just improving every week,” Cottrell said. “She’s one of those athletes who’s given advice, takes it and excels.”

Audra Boyd also PR’ed in the discus (95-02).

San Benito will compete Thursday in a dual meet at Salinas.

The following are individual results for the Haybalers.
