Bunco Social

The annual Lady Elks Bunco Social is set for March 5 at the Hollister Elks Lodge. A social is at 5 p.m., a dinner at 6 p.m. and Bunco at 7 p.m. Join us for an evening of food, fun and conversation and a chance to win. The cost is $10 for Bunco.

Band’s Spring Concert

The Watsonville Community Band presents its 60th Spring Concert tonight at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St., at 7:30 p.m. March 5. This free concert will feature renditions of “America the Beautiful,” “Light Cavalry Overture,” and a big band arrangement of Barbara Streisand classics. The band will also debut their newest song, “Red Hat Serenade,” written by band member Bill St. Pierre in memory of his late wife, Doris, who was an active Red Hat member.

March 13

Sacred Heart science fair

Inquisitive young scientists from Sacred Heart School will display their science fair projects on March 13 at the Sacred Heart Gym, 630 College St. Students in grades K through 3 are allowed to work in groups or individually, and their projects may be demonstrations or experiments. Students in grades 4 through 8 will present individual projects, utilizing the scientific method. A team of six local scientists will judge the entries that evening and select the winners who will go on to the County Science Fair the following week. The student body will view all the science fair entries on March 14.

Crafters needed

The Ladies Auxiliary, VFW, Post #9242 is looking for crafters for the spring craft show March 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 649 San Benito St., Hollister. Cost for vendors is $4 for an 8-foot by 10-foot space. A table and two chairs will be available if needed.

Lincoln-Reagan Day Dinner

The San Benito County Republican Party will hold a Lincoln-Reagan Day Dinner at 6:30 p.m. March 15 at Paine’s Restaurant, 421 East St. The featured guest will be Tim Morgan, treasurer for the Republican National Committee. It’s $20 per couple for the private reception with the speaker, with limited space and reservations required. The dinner is $50 per person with a silent auction. Aromas ABAY auction

The Aromas Home and School Club will host a night of fine food, wine and live music March 15 at 6 p.m. at San Juan Oaks Golf Club. The theme is “Denim and Diamonds” and will feature items donated by community businesses as well as baskets created by each of Aromas School’s classes. All money generated by the Aromas Home and School Club are used for Aromas School students, staff and teachers.

San Juan Easter Parade

The 20th annual Easter Parade in San Juan Bautista is set for 11 a.m. March 16. The theme is “Springtacular 1988” and it will be held in downtown. Parade applications are available at the San Juan chamber office at 209 Third St.

VFW pasta feed

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9242 invites the public to attend its inaugural pasta feed fundraiser March 22 at the Veterans Memorial Building. Proceeds go to support VFW programs while providing support and services for troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan and those returning home. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner’s at 7 p.m. From 8 p.m. until midnight there will be music and dancing. Tickets are $25 per person.

VFW Easter egg hunt

The Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold its annual Easter egg hunt on March 22. It will be at the Veterans Memorial Park starting at 1 p.m. There will be three areas for hunting eggs for various age groups.

A free workshop will be offered through San Benito County Behavioral Health beginning Thursday, March 31 at 6:15 p.m. at San Benito High School. The interactive workshop is for Spanish-speaking parents of 9-14-year olds to help you and your family learn the skills to work together and prevent unhealthy behaviors (such as using alcohol or drugs or gang involvement).

AARP Tax-Aide Program Seeks Volunteers

The AARP is seeking volunteers of all ages who want to learn tax law and help prepare tax returns for middle and low income taxpayers. Volunteers receive free training from the IRS and are asked to give a minimum of 40 hours over a ten week season. Local training is scheduled in late January 2008.

Women’s support group

Are you feeling pushed to your limit, isolated, depressed or misunderstood?

Have you been hit by a partner, emotionally abused or sexually assaulted?

If you’d like to talk to people who understand, contact Community Solutions about a Women’s Support Group. It runs 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays.

Tax service

The American Association of Retired Persons tax-aide program offers free personal tax counseling and preparation to all taxpayers with middle and low incomes, with special attention to those over age 60. Until April 10, the service will be available by appointment only. People should bring the tax package they received, last year’s return and all relevant information.

Brain Injury Support

The Brain Injury Support Group meets from 6-8 p.m. every second and fourth Thursday of the month at Poblanita Restaurant, 313 Third St. in San Juan Bautista. Anyone who has had a brain injury, stroke or aneurysm is welcome to attend, along with caregivers, family and friends.

Republican Party meeting

The San Benito County Republican Party has changed its monthly meeting to the first Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Pacific Coast Bank Community Room, 260 Tres Pinos Road, Hollister. The location is across Rancho Drive from the San Benito Bank.
