In a non-conference match, Carmel beats San Benito 208-232 at
The Links at Spanish Bay in Pebble Beach
Battling wind, greens, wind and the Carmel boys golf team, the San Benito Haybalers fell 208-232 at The Links at Spanish Bay on Thursday, but experienced one of best golf courses in the country.
“It’s not an easy golf course,” coach Sal Felice said. “It’s a tough golf course and the wind was whipping.”
Playing on the par-35 front nine of the famous links-style course, the ‘Balers managed to play consistent, with each score ranging between 45 and 48.
Carmel’s Luke Divolo, though, medaled the round with a 3-over 38.
“You have to hit different types of shots that you wouldn’t hit at Ridgemark or San Juan Oaks,” Felice said. “It’s a tough golf course to play for the first time.”
With blustery winds being a factor, even leading Felice to say it was a “long” 3,043 yards, Derell Aton led San Benito with a 45, while Nathan Winn and Justin Palmquist each carded a 46. Joey Amaral shot a 47, and Will Cross and Zach Davis each finished the front nine with a 48.
With Carmel calling Spanish Bay home, Felice said it helps to know the course, as many of the shots are blind and the course is lined with plenty of bunkers.
“But they weren’t disappointed, which makes me happy,” Felice added. “It was a good experience for the kids.”
On Monday, San Benito will host the Los Altos Invitational at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister. Tee time is 12 p.m.
