Who runs the site: The site is a nonprofit, nonpartisan project by the Alliance for Climate Protection. One of the founders is former Vice President Al Gore. Some of the groups involved on the advisory committee include the Natural Resource Defense Council, Environmental Defense, Blue-Green Alliance, Sierra Club and others.

Who is likely to use the site: People who are interested in letting political leaders know that they want policy that supports solutions to climate change, as well as people looking for more information on topics around climate change. So far more than 1.2 million users have joined the campaign.

Pros: This site is slick, as is the ad campaign supporting it. A picture of Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich sitting on a bench together in a magazine ad is what first drew our attention to this site. When users first click on the main page, a video automatically starts with a woman, a presenter, who explains a little bit about the site. The site is easy to navigate and has a variety of links across the top that allow users to find the information they want. The first link explains why users should join the “We campaign.” After that is a link to solutions, ways to take action, and how the campaign is succeeding as well as the basic links that tell about the founders, press and blogger mentions and a store.

Those who sign up for the site basically join the “We campaign.” On the “take action” link users can essentially sign petitions that favor policies that will lower energy consumption. Two of the options include a petition that supports incentives for clean energy jobs and another that supports a global treaty on climate change.

Users can also read news articles about global warming and learn about how to lower their impact on the environment.

Cons: The automatic videos will make the Web site hard to view with a slower Internet connection, and like other sites or nonprofits, we suspect that once a user signs up they can expect regular e-mail updates, whether they want some or not.
