In an effort to recognize the influx of teenage musicians in south Santa Clara County, the Gilroy Garlic Festival will host a Battle of the Bands competition as part of its 30th anniversary celebration July 25 to 27.

“Every year as we review performers to entertain on our main stages the quality of young local musicians has become more evident,” said 2008 Festival entertainment co-chairman Rich Dellamaggiore. “It’s time we provide these groups a platform to showcase their talents. And this competition will provide an added attraction for our teenage and young adult audience.”

The Festival will host 45 live concerts on three stages during the three-day food extravaganza including the appearance of two national country music recording artists to be announced by KRTY radio and the farewell performances of festival rock ‘n’ roll legends Shaboom.

The Battle of the Bands will be staged in a shade tent on the ranch side adjacent to Gourmet Alley on July 25 and 26 with two finalists returning for July 27 performances on the Gazebo stage.

Dellamaggiore added that a cash prize will be awarded to the winner and runner-up.

Groups wishing to participate should contact the festival office at (408) 842-1625 to obtain an application.
