Morgan Hill’s John Ellis missed the cut by two strokes
With the PGA Tour at his stomping ground, John Ellis delivered a stalwart performance last week in the RBC Canadian Open but failed to make the cut.

Ellis, 28, who’s been atop the Canadian Tour Order of Merit for most of the past three months, bowed out after carding 4-over 75 Saturday in the second round at Oakville, Ontario’s 7,222-yard Glen Abbey. The Morgan Hill native shot a 73 in the first round to finish at 148. The tournament cutoff was 141.

Ellis was playing in his first PGA Tour event since lasting two rounds in last month’s U.S. Open at Torrey Pines.

Ellis’ score took a two-stroke hit in the second round Saturday but he ended the day strong, tallying birdies on the par-5 13th hole and par-3 No. 15. He shot even through the final three holes. Ellis offset that with bogeys on six of the first eight holes, reversing a trend seen Thursday. Ellis opened the tournament with a birdie and was 1-under at the turn after bogeying the par-4 eighth hole and collecting a birdie on No. 9. He shot par on Nos. 10 and 11 but settled for bogeys on Nos. 12, 15 and 16. Ellis was even on the 17th and 18th. He was unavailable for comment.

Chez Reavie won the tournament with a 1-under 70 in Sunday’s final round. It was his first PGA Tour title.

Ellis retained a commanding lead in the Order of Merit through eight Canadian Tour events this year. The next is the Canadian Tour International Team Matches, which Ellis is eligible for.
