District 1 Councilman Brad Pike said today he’s “50-50” on whether to run for a second term.

Pike pointed to changes at work – he was a captain with the Saratoga Fire Department, which recently merged with the Santa Clara Fire Department – and said he’s still uncertain whether he can fulfill the commitment on the Hollister council.

“It’s a toss-up,” said Pike, whose district encompasses Northern Hollister. “It’s a big learning curve with all their (the fire department’s) stuff.”

He pointed out that he might not have enough time while noting, for example, how his new department can require overtime.

His main concern is offering what he called the “level of quality they deserve” to constituents. Pike is spending the afternoon at the San Francisco Zoo with his family, with whom he expects to discuss his dilemma. He said he expects to make a decision by Monday.

Pike also said his fire chief is fine with him running for reelection.
