– People receiving assistance through the Electronic Benefit
Transfer system can now shop conveniently at the Hollister Farmers
Market.
The Farmers’ Market committee has been working for the last year
towards establishing an EBT Program at the market, and now clients
can electronically exchange EBT funds for wooden tokens in order to
purchase eligible foods, including fruits, vegetables, chicken,
beef, and eggs
– more options than what is currently available for customers
who use Women, Infants and Children coupons.
San Benito Bank sponsored the cost of the wooden tokens,
available in $1 and 50 cent denominations and the state of
California has provided a free wireless, point of service (POS)
terminal providing a seamless transfer of funds.
Sharlene Van Rooy, market manager, will be monitoring the
program, and clients who wish to shop at the market will be able to
locate her at the POS table along the west side of the market.

Prevention strategies to be discussed

HOLLISTER – San Benito County Behavioral Health will hold a stakeholders’ meeting to discus needs for prevention and early intervention in San Benito County on Aug. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Behavioral Health office, 111 San Felipe Road.

Nominations will be accepted through Aug. 22 for the Gavilan College 2008 Community Spirit Awards. Three sets of awards will be presented: one for Morgan Hill, one for Gilroy, and one for San Benito County. In each community, one individual, one business, and one organization will be recognized at an awards ceremony in the fall.

GHS hosts reunion

GILROY – Gilroy High School Class of 1978 will host its 30th reunion Saturday, Sept. 27 at the Gilroy Elks Lodge. Cost is $80 per person, and activities will include no-host cocktails, dinner, casino games, raffle prizes, survey results and photos. Reservations must be made no later than Saturday, Sept. 6. Little league tryouts

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Little League will have sign-ups for Fall Ball Saturday, Aug. 2 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Hollister. Fall Ball is a program designed to offer Hollister Little League players ages 6 to 12 years old extra instruction, and provide an added opportunity to those players who anticipate moving up to the next division in 2009. No scores or standings are kept. For parents, Fall Ball is also a good time for new coaches and managers to get their start. All games are played at Vets Park during a seven-week season, beginning Sept. 8. Cost is $50 per player, which includes a uniform.

CASA looks for more volunteers

HOLLISTER – CASA of San Benito is a nonprofit organization looking for volunteers to become trained Court Appointed Special Advocates for Foster Children in San Benito County. We are continuously looking for community members who are interested in becoming advocates. Volunteers go through a training course that teaches them about the foster care system, advocacy for children and some of the emotional problems the children may have before they are sworn in as officers of the court and assigned children.
