A 16-year-old boy hit one of two 7-Eleven employees on the head with a metal pipe after they stopped him from stealing a case of beer early this morning.

About 12 a.m. Monday, the Hispanic male entered the convenience store at 162 W. 10th St., grabbed the case of beer and ran from the store, police said. Two store employees took off after the boy, overtook him and got him to drop the beer.

However, the boy then used a metal pipe assaulted the employees, one of whom was hit on the back of his head and had to be transported to a hospital, where he received 17 staples, police said. The other employee was also injured, but police did not specify how.

Police were able to find the boy later that morning and arrested him on suspicion of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

More details of the robbery and arrest will be posted throughout the day and will be printed in Tuesday’s Dispatch.
