Baseball League. Interested participants ages 12-15 years of age,
including all 15-year olds whol played Babe Ruth this past regular
season, can register Saturday, Aug. 23 from 8-9 a.m. at the Babe
Ruth field at Veteran’s Memorial Par

Cost is $50 per player, which covers insurance, equipment,
baseballs and hats. All players must bring a copy of their birth
certificate, doctor/dentist contact information, medical insurance
information and payment. Teams will be formed Monday, Aug. 24 and
the number of teams will depend upon the number of players who
register. Games should begin the week of Sept. 15 with the season

Fallon Road closing
HOLLISTER – A short stretch of Fallon Road at Meadow Lane east of Fairview will close Sept. 1 and remain closed for the month.

Countywide emergency notification system is up
HOLLISTER – The first countywide test call of the new emergency notification system is today, Aug. 18. The new service from Connect-CTY staff allows local officials to send voice messages to county residents and businesses in the event of an emergency.
Publicly available primary residential and business phone numbers in the county are automatically included in the system. Residents can provide up to three phone numbers, two e-mail addresses and indicate if they have telecommunications devices for the deaf by visiting www.san-benito.ca.us and clicking the “sign up now-services by Connect-CTY” link. Texas Hold ’em anyone?
HOLLISTER – The first Hollister Texas Hold ’em Tournament is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. this Saturday, Aug. 23, at the SDES Hall at 695 Seventh St.
Doors open at noon and the entry donation is $40. The event is a fundraiser for the Hollister city employee Relay for Life team. Grand prize is a golf package valued at $1,100. Beverages and snacks are free. Entrants must be 21 or older.

Pinnacles feedback is sought
PAICINES – Pinnacles National Monument staff is hosting public meetings to solicit public comments for its new general management plan preliminary alternatives, which will determine the direction of the park for the next 15 to 20 years.
“We’d like to hear from you. Your comments will help us understand the impacts of these proposals and develop a long-range plan for Pinnacles that reflects your perspectives,” said Eric Brunnemann, Pinnacles superintendent.
The sessions give the public a chance to learn about the draft alternatives presented and to offer ideas and perspectives.
A newsletter containing information on the preliminary alternatives is available at www.nps.gov/pinn/parkmgmt/planning.htm. The comment period for the Pinnacles plan alternatives is open through Oct. 31.
Public meetings are scheduled for 7-9 p.m. Aug. 25 at Jefferson School, 221 Old Hernandez Road, Paicines; and 6-8 p.m. Aug. 27 at Soledad High School, 425 Gabilan Drive, Soledad.
Are you a leader?
HOLLISTER – Space is still available in the 2008-09 class from Leadership San Benito County, a nonprofit dedicated to developing the county’s next generation of leaders. The yearlong class meets once per month. Students learn about issues facing the county from experts in their field. Tuition is $1,200.

Gavilan committee needs volunteers
GILROY – The Gavilan College Measure E Citizen’s Oversight Committee has openings for a senior citizen’s representative and a taxpayers’ group representative. The measure, passed on March 2, 2004, approved a $108 million in bonds for Gavilan College for facilities improvements. The committee includes at-large representatives, and representatives from business, seniors, students, taxpayers and the Gavilan College Educational Foundation. The committee meets quarterly at the Gavilan College Campus and Gilroy. Meetings are open to the public.

Blood Drive
HOLLISTER- The Northern California Region of the American Red Cross is holding a blood drive on Sept. 4 at the Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints church hall between 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Donors will receive a coupon for a free pint of Baskin Robbins ice cream. Every week in September there will be a drawing for a $100 gas gift card. The grand prize drawing for all entries is a $1,000 gas gift card.

Women’s Health Summit set
SALINAS – The Sixth Annual Women’s Health Summit will be held Friday, Sept. 19 and Saturday, Sept. 20 in Salinas. Assembly member Anna Caballero will again be hosting the event. Friday’s event, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. will be for professionals in the health care industry, and will be held at the Board of Supervisors Chambers at 168 W. Alisal. St., in Salinas. The second day, Sept. 20, will be open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Hartnell College Dining Commons, 411 Central Ave., in Salinas.
The goal of the workshops and the community event is to address key issues in access to healthcare, especially those facing women.
Algebra I plan
SACRAMENTO – California Department of Education staff released a $3.1 billion plan to implement a new state requirement that all eighth graders take Algebra I within three years, according to a CDE release.
“This is by no means an exhaustive list of what is required, but all of these components are crucial to set in motion right now if the mandate is to be met,” said Jack O’Connell, state superintendent of public instruction.
The proposed plan would expand student support programs, improve curriculum and professional development for teachers and enhance math teacher recruitment and retention programs.

HOLLISTER – Girl Scout Troop 43484 from Hollister is doing a Care Packets Drive for U.S. troops.
The troop will be collecting items on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 2066 Cienega Road. Donors are asked not to bring hotel/motel samples.
