Fall sports teams continue competition
Baler football
It didn’t take long for San Benito to revert back to its old
self again. With their defense stout as usual and their offense
looking to establish a run game early, the Haybalers returned to
physical, grind-it-out type football Friday night, compiling 188
yards on the ground en route to a 15-13 victory over the visiting
Wilcox Chargers at Andy Hardin Stadium.

San Benito improves to 2-1 and will visit Oak Grove tonight, Friday. Knotted at 13-all, Wilcox sat at their own 10-yard line with approximately eight minutes remaining in regulation. On third-and-eight, linebacker Isaak Ramos wrapped up the quarterback’s legs at the goal line, and linemen Robby Sanchez and Sam Doty swarmed toward the stationary signal-caller and piled on, resulting in the game-winning safety.
San Benito quarterback Kyle Vallejo finished 4 of 12 for 146 yards and two touchdowns, first hitting Evan McFadden for a 66-yard score and later connecting with Andre Cornell on a 55-yard touchdown pass.
Girls’ tennis
The San Benito girls tennis team delivered a spirited sweep of Notre Dame last Thursday at the Ridgemark Golf and Country Club, and opened the Tri-County Athletic League with a 7-0 victory against one of their top rivals.
On Tuesday, the Lady Balers equaled the outcome and posted another 7-0 win, this time against host Alisal.
Girls’ vollyeball
The San Benito girls’ volleyball team finished 2-2 at the Harbor Invitational last weekend, and opened the Tri-County Athletic League Tuesday with a victory over Alisal in three games (25-14, 25-19, 25-21).
Last Thursday, Coach Dean Askanas jumbled the lineup and moved Sam Klauer and Shayna Nakata, normally his liberos, to the outside and moved Sara Yamasaki to the libero position, supplying San Benito with three defensive specialists on the floor.
Askanas at the time called it the best combination of offense and defense he’s seen this season on the team.
Water polo
Both the boys’ and girls’ water polo teams fell to host Live Oak on Tuesday. The Haybalers lost 14-12 while the Lady Balers fell 12-3.
Although it was the first game in a week for the Baler boys, the Lady Balers were coming off a fifth-place performance at the Wilcox Tournament, where they went 2-2.
Girls’ golf
Fresh off their 218-233 victory against Gilroy, the San Benito girls’ golf team cracked 200 on Monday, as they beat visiting Everett Alvarez 200-262.
Jordan Davies (46) and Nicole Rianda (49) each supplied San Benito with sub-50 scores.
Cross country
The Baler boys took advantage of their home course of Park Hill on Monday, running to an easy 15-42 victory over the Gilroy Mustangs. The girls race, however, was far closer than their male counterparts, and San Benito lost by a slim 24-31 margin.
Courtney Allen (21:01.5) was second overall, while Rachel Shimabukuro (22:14.1) was fourth, Dayna Casillas (22:46.8) sixth, Grace Tobias (23:58.8) ninth and Ana Rosa Duarte (24:24.3) 10th.
The boys were led by Frankie Rivera (17:48.2), Adrian Rodriguez (17:51.9), Eddie Guzman (18:20.2), Jose Castillo (18:44.6) and Jorge Agular (18:47.9), who finished in places first through fifth.
