Rivalries don’t always make for classic matchups, which was the case Thursday as Gilroy High’s varsity boys water polo team lost 19-2 to the visiting San Benito Haybalers.

The Mustangs received both of their goals in the final period, one by Zack Kendrick and the other by Cameron Brown.

San Benito had five different scorers: Ryan Whiteside (7 goals, 5 in the first half), Jordan Schafer (5 goals), Nick Angulo (4 goals), Matt McCullough (2 goals) and Thomas Parcell (1 goal).

“I feel bad because Gilroy is so young,” Haybalers coach Tom Agan said.

Gilroy brings back only one varsity player – Eddie Malick – from last season’s team, which finished 2-6. The Mustangs are currently 0-4 after a tough preseason tournament at Lincoln High School last weekend.

Gilroy coach Tom Clark thought his players were watching too much and were slow to get back in transition, noting his team “played better in a couple games” at the tournament.

The two squads in Thursday’s game appear likely to end up on opposite sides of the Tri-County Athletic League standings, as San Benito is hoping to challenge Salinas for the league title.

“I think Salinas is the odds-on favorite,” Agan said. “Having said that, if our guys work hard, we can [win league]. It’s within reach.”

The Haybalers are currently 3-1.
