The planned condor release at Pinnacles National Monument has been postponed due to “the series of storms predicted to hit central California over the next few days,” according to a press release from the park.

Eric Brunnemann, superintendent of Pinnacles National Monument, explained the reasoning in the statement.

“We choose not to risk the health and safety of Pinnacles’ newest juvenile condors by exposing them to inclement weather immediately upon release into an unfamiliar environment,” explains Brunnemann, who adds: “The two condors previously scheduled to be released Saturday will be released without a public event at a later date. The other five will remain in captivity for another one to two additional weeks to help ensure that the free-flying birds remain nearby for biologists to monitor.”

The park does plan to hold “many of the same activities throughout the day” to accommodate many expected visitors.

But according to Carl Brenner, chief of interpretation and education, the event area will be relocated to the field adjacent to the visitors’ center in the campground, with activities from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ranger programs, information booths and education tables will still be there, and biologists will answer any questions as well.

Those interested in further information regarding the events can call Brenner at (831) 389–4486, extension 265.
