DMB’s Becker dies
Ray Becker, the most visible member of a team proposing a 6,800-unit housing development between Hollister and Gilroy, died at his San Juan Bautista home Tuesday, Oct. 7. He was 59.
Becker was vice president in charge of entitlements for DMB’s El Rancho San Benito project.
Although Becker had only lived in the county since 2004, his work and outgoing nature made him a well-known figure throughout the community. As news of his death spread, the staff at DMB’s Hollister office were deluged with calls.
“We’ve just been overwhelmed with the outpouring from the community,” said Mike Roberts of DMB.
A 25-year veteran of the real estate development industry, Becker managed development of master-planned communities and many retail and industrial projects across Southern California before coming to San Benito.
At the time of his death, he was serving as chairman of the California Building Industry Association, an organization representing more than 7,000 homebuilding and related companies across California. He also was president-elect of the San Juan Bautista Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Becker, and two adult children.
Plans for services were still pending at press time.
