Sam Paveza

Sam Paveza was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout on June 30, 2008 when he completed his Eagle Board of Review. An Eagle Court of Honor was held on July 26 at Machado School to celebrate his accomplishment. Sam received letters of congratulations from President and Mrs. Bush, Sen. Diane Feinstein, Sen. Abel Maldonado, Congressman Jerry McNerney, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Assemblyman John Laird and Morgan Hill Mayor Steve Tate. He also received an American flag that was flown over the nation’s capital.

Sam joined Morgan Hill’s Troop 700 in 2002. As Sam advanced in rank, he also advanced in leadership. He served two consecutive terms as Senior Patrol Leader.

For his Eagle Project, Sam joined with The Friends of the Morgan Hill Library and librarian Rosanne Macek to help plan the grand opening of the new library that opened July 21, 2007. He recruited volunteers from three Boy Scout troops and Venture Scouts, involving kids from the entire community in an important Morgan Hill event.

Brianna Cassara

Brianna Cassara received the Youth High 5 award from the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce sponsored by Heritage Bank. Brianna was selected for the award by the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for her community contributions including: Participating in the Habitat for Humanity fundraiser held at Coldwell Banker over the past four years; helping CanTree collect food in South County each holiday season and volunteering to pack the food in the boxes; serving as an assistant Sunday School teacher at Foothills Foursquare Church; traveling to Mexico last spring to assist in building a home for a family; and she recently donated her prized horse, Petey, to Dream Power. Dream Power is a local non-profit organization that uses horses to help handicapped children in rehabilitation. The award was presented by Alan Ladd, branch manager for Heritage Bank of Commerce.

Scott Adams

Scott Adams of Gilroy joined the largest graduating class in Whitworth history as the university celebrated its 118th Commencement May 18 in Spokane, Wash. Adams was awarded a bachelor’s degree in biology.

Located in Spokane, Whitworth is a private, liberal-arts university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. The university, which enrolls 2,600 students, offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs.

Emma Ann McMahon

Emma Ann McMahon was born Sept. 2, 2008 at Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital to James and Felicia McMahon of Hollister. She weighed 9 pounds, 1.4 ounces.

Nathan Jacob Jimenez

Nathan Jacob Jimenez was born July 12, 2008 at Saint Louise Regional Hospital to Xochilt and Francisco Jimenez of Gilroy. He weighed 8 pounds.

WEDDINGS

Sanders/Mezerkor

Leanne Mezerkor and Rubin Sanders were married May 3, 2008 in Pacific City, Ore.

Leanne, daughter of Wayne and Diane Mezerkor of Hollister, is a graduate of San Benito High School and San Francisco State University. She is a childcare teacher at Bright Horizon in Beaverton, Ore.

Rubin, son of John and Betty Sanders of Aumsville, Ore., is a graduate of Cascade High School in Aumsville, Ore. He is a finish carpenter and glazer.

The ocean and haystack rock provided a magnificent backdrop to the beach wedding in Pacific City, Ore. Guests from California and Oregon enjoyed the reception at the Pelican Pub at the beach. The couple now resides in Portland.

Townsend/Harlow

Sue Townsend and Tom Harlow, both of Hollister, were married Aug. 8, 2008 on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii, where they enjoyed a 10-day honeymoon trip.

On Aug. 23, 2008, Sue’s sister Barbara Cosio hosted a reception at her home in Hollister for a group of approximately 60 close friends and family. In attendance were four of Tom and Sue’s five children and three of their nine grandchildren. The Cosio home, pool and patio were beautifully decorated with a Hawaiian motif. A tasteful wedding cake by Chef Carlos of the Cedar House was a gracious centerpiece. Catered and favorite homemade dishes from friends and family kept all well fed and entertained. Live and recorded music and dancing added to the festivities.

ANNIVERSARY

The Blundos celebrate 50 years

Frank and Betty Blundo of Gilroy will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Saturday. The couple was married Oct. 4, 1958. On their golden anniversary, their family offers love and gratitude.
