– At some time, most people find themselves looking for
housing.
If you know someone who has struggled seeking rental housing, a
starter home, senior housing, a homeless shelter, housing for a
large number of people, a dwelling that is accessible for
wheelchairs, housing with affordable rent or house payments or
temporary shelter for persons with addictions, an upcoming workshop
may help.
The city of Hollister and San Benito County Planning Departments
invite the public to participate in a workshop on Saturday, Oct.
25, in Room 204 of the Veterans Memorial Building to share
concerns, issues and suggestions for housing programs in the city
of Hollister and unincorporated San Benito County. Both agencies
are in the process of revising their housing plans
– Housing Elements.
For the past two months the city and county have been meeting
with nonprofit organizations and social service agencies to
identify housing needs and issues. Public participation is
essential to help the city and county understand the housing needs
of the community and develop policy and programs for housing.
Refreshments will be served from 9 to 9:30 a.m. The workshop will
be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Spanish translation will be

Dump prescriptions the right way

HOLLISTER – Medicine cabinets across California will have the opportunity for a makeover under a statewide campaign to keep people from disposing of drugs by dumping them down the drain.

The No Drugs Down the Drain campaign is a collaborative effort between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Association of Sanitation Agencies and its members and the California Regional Water Quality Control Board.

San Benito County residents may bring expired or unused medications to a collection event on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Nob Hill Pharmacy, Rite Aid Pharmacy, Target Pharmacy and Penny Wise Drug.

Participants are asked to remove prescription labels. Controlled substances will not be accepted.

Voter workshop set

HOLLISTER – A nonpartisan voters’ workshop is set for 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16 at the Barbara Room of the county library on Fifth Street.

Margaret Rebecchi of the League of Women Voters will coordinate the presentation.

Participants can register to vote during the event. (The deadline to register for the Nov. 4 election is Oct. 20.) A presentation covers ballot issues, and voter guides will be available.

Get the facts, then vote

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Republican Central Committee is presenting an election fair from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 in Room 218 of the Veterans Memorial Building at 649 San Benito St.

Plans call for a presentation covering the differences between major parties. A raffle, refreshments and free United States flags will be available.

Rummage sale to raise money for clubs

HOLLISTER – High School clubs and organizations (Club Ed, Outdoor Club, International Travelers-Mexico and London) will hold a rummage sale at the Sunnyslope Medical Complex on Saturday, Oct. 11th from 8 a.m. to noon. Anyone wishing to donate can drop off their gently used goods at the complex or call Rachel Flores at 637-5831 ext. 370.

Annual democratic luncheon

HOLLISTER – The Annual San Benito County Democratic Party Luncheon is Saturday, Oct. 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Paine’s, 421 East St. The speakers will include Congressman Sam Farr and Assemblywoman Anna Caballero. LULAC hosts forum

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County League of United Latin American Citizens is hosting a candidate forum at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20 at the Veterans Memorial Building Annex.

Participanting as forum moderator is Rudy Rodriguez, District 12 LULAC Officer.

The order of presentations will be: Hollister City Council, San Juan City Council, Hollister School District Board of Trustees, San Benito High School District Board of Trustees and San Benito Health Care District.

Each candidate will be allowed two minutes for opening comments, three minutes to field questions from the audience and two minutes for closing comments.

Proponents and opponents of Measures W, X and Y will be allowed two minutes each for their presentations.

Cattlewomen fashion show and luncheon

SAN JUAN – The San Benito County Cattlewomen will host the third annual Fall Fashion Show and Luncheon at San Juan Oaks Golf Club on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at noon. For more information or for reservations, call Sandy Rose at 637-7325 or Jayme Stewart at 637-7766.

Help keep the Grinch away

HOLLISTER – Small Steps, a nonprofit, community-based organization created to assist disadvantaged children in kindergarten through eighth grade, hopes to buy coats and shoes for 375 local children this year. Donations from the community, including individuals and businesses, make it possible for the needy children to shop for coats and shoes. All donations are used solely for the annual program, which this year will take the children on a shopping trip to Target and Payless Shoe Source on Nov. 8. Volunteers are also needed. They must be at least 18 years old and will be checked against the Megan’s Law list. Tax-deductible contributions may be sent to Small Steps, P.O. Box 2137 in Hollister, 95024. HPD back on the beat

HOLLISTER – With the passage of the Measure T local sales tax increase the Hollister Police Department is increasing its staffing over the next two years. As this is accomplished, provisions of the service reductions authorized by the city council in 2007 will be rescinded or modified based upon an assessment of community needs and priorities, and the ability of the department to respond to those needs and priorities.

Effective Sept. 29, patrol officers resumed responding to all reports of automobile burglary, whether or not there is a suspect or the crime is in progress. Officers will conduct criminal investigations and prepare crime reports as appropriate.

Spread the paint around

HOLLISTER – The San Benito County Arts Council invites all local artists to participate in the annual Open Studios tour.

Open to all local artists working in any media, the event is devoted to promoting local artists and assisting them in marketing their work.

The event this year will be held April 25-26, 2009.

Tax-aide volunteers needed

HOLLISTER – The American Association of Retired Persons, the nation’s largest free volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service needs volunteers of all ages who want to learn tax law and help prepare tax returns for middle and low-income taxpayers.

Each year from Feb. 1 to April 15 tax-aide volunteers prepare returns at more than 10,000 sites nationwide.

Tax-aide volunteers receive free training from the Internal Revenue Service. Volunteers are asked to give a minimum of 40 hours over the season.

Feeling crafty!

HOLLISTER – The Hollister Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary is looking for craftspeople for its annual holiday craft show Dec. 6.

The show will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building. Cost for vendors is $40 for an 8-by-10-foot space. A table and two chairs is available for each space.
